Pastor's Message

In Epiphany, our lessons focus us on Jesus teaching about discipleship. We hear that we are blessed even in our life struggles. We are made happy because of God’s love and purpose for us. We are called to bring flavour to the world and light and the presence of God’s unfolding kingdom. We are called to a radical commitment to relationship.

Because we are disciples, we are called to not just refrain from killing each other, but even refrain from putting each other down in anger or pride. We are called to find ways of reconciliation with the people with whom we have conflict.

Because we are disciples we are called to keep in check our desires. We are called to live in healthy, committed relationships and to take the marriage commitment seriously.

Because we are disciples we are called to do what we say we will do and not make a show of it.

Because we are disciples, we are called to take risks being merciful to those who harm us. We are called not only to love our neighbour but our enemy also.

Because we are disciples we are called to not make a show of either our giving or our worship. These should be done from a free and joyous heart, not for the sake of approval or reward.

When we evaluate ourselves in light of these calls to discipleship, it is hard to find ourselves righteous. We might look at our lives and say, “What is the purpose of all I do, what do I accomplish? Living with God is not about accomplishment, it is about service. We are called to the service of God, to hear the call and respond in joyful hope. Dag Hammarskjold put it this way:

...(God) can use you...perhaps God will use you.
And if God doesn’t use you --- what matter.
In his hand every moment has it’s meaning, its greatness, its glory, its peace.
The Markings

Can we so trust God, that from our faltering discipleship, his kingdom will be revealed? Such is the call of Jesus to all who will listen. Even in the living of such discipleship, our happiness is revealed.
