There is a season for every occupation under heaven:
A time for giving birth, a time for dying; ...A time for
embracing, a time for being apart;
...A time for keeping, a time for throwing away;
...A time for silence; a time for speaking.
Ecclesiastes 3:2,5,7
As we approach Fall, we once again are reminded of the seasons. Leaving summer behind can be hard. Few look forward to the first icy days of winter and the treacherous road conditions which come with it. Yet winter must come. We humans tend to pretend we are in control. When tragedy comes to us, a stillborn child, the diagnosis of cancer, or loss of a livelihood, we tend to seek blame. Who caused this? What could I have done to stop it? How can I get back in control?
The writer of Ecclesiastes saw 2400 years ago what still eludes us today. We are not in control of the magnificent vastness of creation, not even the tiny part of it, which we occupy. We bear with envy a misperception that the intelligent, the powerful, the talented, the famous, the successful, do not suffer. They suffer from their own faults, foibles, and forces outside of themselves just like everyone else.
Live in awe of the creative presence from which all, seen and unseen, proceeds. Live with justice, compassion, faith, hope and love. For in these is purpose and meaning beyond the ungraspable nature of life, in which there is a season for every action in Creation.
May your suffering be relieved, your fears overcome, and your spirit soar.
